The Lowcountry city Goose Creek, is located in Berkeley and Charleston counties and is home to an estimated 30, 000 people. With a total of area of around 33 square miles, Goose Creek is a small town and consequently boasts a small town Southern charm. The Naval Nuclear Power School is located in Goose Creek and until the early 1990s the nuclear submarine and submarine tenders were headquartered in the city until the transported to other Atlantic Coast bases due to a reduction in force.
The city’s unique name originates from the nickname “the goose creek men.” The nickname was given to the group of colonists that settled on the Goose Creek stream, a few miles west of Charleston. The “Goose Creek men,” were lowcountry leaders in Indian slave trade and later in deerskin trade. After populating and controlling the Goose Creek stream area for sometime, by the 1690s many of the Goose Creek men held office in the local colonial government. Several of the “Goose Creek men,” eventually became colonial governors, such as James Moore. Centuries later in 1961 the city of Goose Creek was officially established and properly named after its forefathers.
