A pickup truck exploded in Downtown Savannah in Franklin Square, causing hundreds to be evacuated from the area. According to authorities with Metro Police, tanks containing propane and acetylene on the back of a white pickup truck may not have been properly secured. When the driver stopped his vehicle, one of the valves on the tank may have been knocked off, ultimately causing the explosion.
The unidentified driver of the vehicle was able to quickly get out of his truck and was unhurt after the incident. There were no other injuries reported.
Authorities say that the FBI came to the scene of the explosion as a precautionary measure. There does not appear to be any foul play involved in the explosion.
The chemicals that were in the tank that caused the explosion are commonly used for everyday work in construction and other trades.
