Safety During The Big Game

Safety During The Big Game

What do you call the annual family football game? The Turkey Bowl? Maybe you call it The Holiday Showdown. No matter what you call it, one thing is for sure: Everyone looks forward to the Thanksgiving football game in the backyard.

For many family and friends, a game of touch football goes off without a hitch, except maybe for a few sore losers to deal with. Unfortunately for others, the family football game ends abruptly due to an injury. Don’t let that be the way that your game ends. By following a few safety tips, you can be sure that your game is nothing but the fun it is intended to be.

Dress for Success

What are you planning on wearing for the game? If you didn’t answer “light layers,” you should rethink your choice of wardrobe. It may be chilly outside, but things will quickly heat up once you start playing. Dressing in light layers gives you the chance to peel off a few when you need to.

The Right Shoes

Maybe you are wearing boots or flats to the family dinner. They might look great with your outfit, but they can pose a risk when you are playing your game. At the very least, throw a pair of sneakers in the car and change into them before the game starts.

Know the Playing Field

Most people have twisted an ankle at least once in their lives. Stepping into an unseen hole or on top of a rock can cause great pain. Take a walk around the playing field before the game kicks off and remove any objects that pose a hazard. Fill in any holes or divets you find. Doing this will help to prevent any twisted or sprained ankles.

Touch, Not Tackle

Football games can get carried away. Resist the urge to tackle someone instead of touching them or pulling off a flag. Most people aren’t trained in taking a tackle, and even more don’t know how to perform one safely. Stick with touching.

Don’t Drink

Drinking alcohol before you play will inhibit your ability to make quick decisions. Even a slight buzz can make it difficult to maintain your balance. Don’t drink until after the game is over.

The annual family football game doesn’t have to be called short due to an injury. Follow the safety tips above to help ensure that none of your friends and family leave the party any worse for the wear.
