Five Riskiest Surgeries For Patients

Any surgery carries with it an inherent amount of risk. Very few could tell you that any surgery doesn’t bring with it the possibility of injury or, in the worst cases, death. Medical malpractice cases run the gamut of procedures, but there are certain surgeries that are riskier than others. Here are the top five.

  1. Craniectomy

A craniectomy involves cutting a piece of the skull away in order to allow a surgeon access to the brain. The piece of skull is not replaced when the surgery is complete. Patients who recover after the surgery must protect their heads for the rest of their lives or risk injury or changes in bodily processes and functions.

  1. Surgical Ventricular Restoration

If you have congestive heart failure resulting from a heart attack, your doctor may recommend this surgery. During the procedure, you will be put on a heart-lung machine. The surgeon will work to restore your heart to its normal size and function through surgical means.

  1. Spinal Osteomyelitis Surgery

This spinal infection typically requires surgery as a last resort. If, however, you are suffering with a deformity, defect, abscess, or spinal instability, you may require surgery as an initial means of correction. Risks include serious infection and full or partial paralysis.

  1. Coronary Revascularization

This surgery is also called coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). The goal of this procedure is to reroute the blood around a clogged artery and improve the flow to your heart. Veins and arteries are grafted from other parts of your body. It is a risky surgery that is not right for every patient.

  1. Bladder Cystectomy

When you are diagnosed with bladder cancer, this is the most common surgery recommended. During the procedure, part or all of your bladder is removed. Risks include infection and, if the entire bladder is not removed, leaks from the site of the incision.

Any surgery carries with it certain risks. Be sure that your doctor explains these risks to you so you can make an informed decision regarding your care. If you do not understand the procedure or why it is necessary, be sure to ask for clarification or more information.
