On Monday, July 2, an accident involving two tractor trailers and two passenger vehicles occurred on I-26 Eastbound in North Charleston, South Carolina. The accident began when a 2005 Volvo tractor trailer ran into the rear of the pickup truck, causing a chain reaction. The Volvo tractor trailer and an Audi SUV both caught fire. The SUV driver died at the scene from fatal injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer exited the vehicle safely with no injuries. The two passengers in the GMC pickup truck were transported to a local hospital by EMS.
The Charleston County Consolidated Dispatchers received the call at approximately 1:52 p.m. Responders to the scene included Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, Charleston Police Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol, North Charleston Police and Fire, and Charleston County EMS. The pile-up caused the interstate to shut down for four hours.
Even when drivers on the interstate are doing everything correctly – no cellphone distractions, adhering to the proper speed limit, switching lanes safely – accidents can and do occur. Others on the road may not be paying attention and this could put you and your loved ones at risk.
This 4th of July, remember to travel safely. With many people traveling and celebrations that often involve alcohol, drivers may make mistakes on the road. If you see any car or large commercial vehicle driving in a dangerous manner, take caution by putting space in between your car and the other vehicle.
