Distracted Driving Accidents In South Carolina

Distracted driving accidents are a real problem in South Carolina. The University of South Carolina found that more than 9,000 accidents in 2013 were linked to distracted driving.  In this post, we’ll take a closer look at what distracted driving is and how you can avoid it.

Mobile phone usage has contributed to the alarming increase in accidents in South Carolina. Distracted driving is a factor in approximately 3,000 crashes and 300 deaths each year.  Social media, checking emails, or even video chatting while behind the wheel are now normal behavior. These distracted behaviors significantly impair a driver’s ability to operate their vehicle safely. It is important to remember that all drivers need to understand the potential dangers and refrain from engaging in any activities that distract from driving.

Distracted driving is a problem throughout the country, but it is particularly concerning in South Carolina. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, distracted driving was a contributing factor in over 11,000 car accidents a year.

South Carolina Doesn’t Enforce Driving Standards

Yet despite these alarming statistics, the state currently has some of the lowest fines and suspensions for distracted driving offenses. However, research shows that increasing the penalties for distracted driving can have a significant impact on reducing accidents. It’s time for South Carolina to take tougher action against distracted driving to protect both drivers and pedestrians from preventable tragedies.

One solution could be implementing heavier fines or longer suspensions for repeat offenders. In addition, increased education and awareness campaigns about the dangers of distracted driving could further decrease these incidents and save lives on our roads.

Accidents Don’t Have to Happen

Distracted driving accidents in South Carolina are on the rise.  In order to try and combat this dangerous behavior, fines must be increased, laws need to be tightened and social shaming needs to become more commonplace.
