Workers' Compensation

Road Construction Workers Face Danger Daily

Road construction season is in full swing on South Carolina roads. Now is the perfect time to review the risks that road construction workers are subjected to everyday and how drivers can help keep these men and women safe while they perform their jobs. Work zone accidents increase each year, and it is up to everyone to understand the dangers that are involved in this type of work.

The Risks

There are several potential hazards to road construction workers. They not only work in traffic, but they often operate heavy equipment. According to the Department of Transportation, more than 20,000 road workers are injured each year. In 2013, 105 of these men and women died in accidents occurring in construction zones.

Prevention

The majority of these accidents are preventable. Distracted driving and speeding account for most of the accidents, and these two things are completely under the control of drivers. Unfortunately, workers in construction zones cannot prevent accidents as they are already doing everything they can to keep themselves and each other safe.

When you come upon a work zone, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Stick to the posted speed limit. Keep in mind that it is often lowered in a work zone.
  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • Turn your headlights on if there are signs telling you to do so.
  • Maintain at least a car’s length from the car ahead of you.
  • Do not text or talk on your cell phone. Avoid other distractions as well.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Be patient.

Driving carefully through a work zone is in your best interest and that of the workers you are passing. In 90 percent of all accidents, a worker was struck by a vehicle. Be alert and keep your eyes open for workers. Their lives depend on your actions.
